It’s Washington’s Birthday--

Presidents Day doesn’t honor all presidents

You might think Presidents Day is a day set aside to commemorate the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln simultaneously. You would be wrong.

Or you might think it’s a day the federal government has designated to honor all American presidents. You’d be wrong again.

As a matter of fact, Presidents Day isn’t Presidents Day at all, at least not according to the legislation passed in Congress more than a quarter of a century ago. It’s Washington’s Birthday. All that the legislation did was say the birthday would be recognized as an official federal holiday to be observed on the third Monday of February instead of the actual day that George Washington was born, Feb. 22.

So why all the confusion? Partly it derives from a bill that would have combined the celebration of the Lincoln and Washington birthdays. That bill, however, failed. Then, there are a couple of dozen states in the land that have done their own thing, figuring that if they want to call the holiday Presidents Day, they will, by golly, call it that.

For many Americans, it makes little difference. They are too busy enjoying themselves and taking advantage of the various Presidents Day sales. Some historians are upset, though. Several are campaigning to have a day that celebrates Washington, Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt. But throwing in Roosevelt’s name is not such a great idea, seeing as how his administration is close enough to us in time to arouse all sorts of partisan arguments about whether he belongs in that pantheon.

The real shame is that George Washington gets so little attention on the day officially set aside to recognize his contributions to this country.

Despite their most assiduous efforts, the revisionists have yet to tarnish him. His courage, steadfastness, honor and dignity helped win the war that established our independence, helped direct a convention that wrote our Constitution and helped establish precedents in the presidency that have played a role in keeping us free.

Today, all of that is worth thinking about.

Bringing gay history out of the closet

AIDS activist says writing these chapters of American history is vital to the strength of the gay community

By John Nichols, Feb. 26, 1999

Larry Kramer has an interest in Abraham Lincoln's sex life that is neither prurient nor academic. It is political.

"Lincoln is the gay president I'm out to get for us,'' says the internationally acclaimed writer and gay activist.

"Us'' is the gay community. And Kramer makes no bones about his certainty that America's gays and lesbians would benefit tremendously if historians were to establish that Lincoln had in fact fallen in love with his friend Joshua Speed -- as Kramer speculates was the case in the late 1830s, when the two men lived together in Springfield, Ill.

To be sure, Lincoln and Speed were close, as is evident from their voluminous and lifelong correspondence -- which has been reproduced in a number of volumes. But lovers? Well, even Kramer, an avid student of history, admits that he is still piecing the story together.

The runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize, whose Broadway plays and film scripts have swept top honors in American theater and film circles, admits that he does not know where his exploration of the story of the man he refers to as "our gay president'' will ultimately lead.

That's fine by Kramer.

As D.H. Lawrence -- for whose classic novel "Women in Love'' Kramer wrote the screenplay -- once said, "It is better to travel hopefully than to arrive.'' And, at 63, Kramer is traveling hopefully into the history of his nation and its sexuality.

He is writing a book, "The American People,'' which began as a story of the AIDS crisis but has evolved into an epic study of the history that dare not speak its name.

"History is about possession,'' says Kramer, who was in Madison this month to deliver a series of lectures and workshops associated with the Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender College Conference at Monona Terrace. "History is about claiming what is ours.''

What Kramer is claiming, among other things, is that there is a hidden history that must be found if gays and lesbians are to claim their rightful place in the American mosaic.

"No one has found our history. Not yet. But it is there. It must be,'' he says. "How can so many of us have lived upon this Earth for so long and left no history? How could we not have been here?''

The truth, as a great many contemporary historians now admit, is that gays and lesbians were written out of history. Walt Whitman, a man who wrote some of the most evocative homoerotic poetry ever put to paper, was for the better part of a century portrayed as asexual. Herman Melville's wife destroyed letters that almost certainly contained details of a more adventurous sexual history than his early biographers acknowledged. And what of the closeness of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, Kramer asks: Why has that relationship not been explored? Again and again, the playwright suggests, the stories of gays and lesbians were expunged from the official record.

"Gays and lesbians never appear in (mainstream) history books,'' Kramer says. "It's hard to believe that so many books are filled with so many lies. This isn't history, this is opinion.''

Is it any coincidence, asks Kramer -- the founder of the Gay Men's Health Crisis, the world's largest provider of services to those with AIDS -- that a society willing to deny the existence of gays and lesbians in its history would respond inadequately to the threat of AIDS, a disease that initially killed so many gay men?

"Our enemies treat us as worthy of denial and death,'' he says.

But the enemies of the gay and lesbian community are not solely responsible for the lack of historical inquiry, argues Kramer. "Practically everything that is being taught in gay studies courses around this country is full of s--t,'' he gripes.

Rather than devoting time to "finding our history,'' Kramer says, scholars who research and teach gay studies seem to be lost in a haze of obscure questions and internal debates that do little to advance the interests of the community that is supposed to be their fascination.

"Nobody's studying our history,'' Kramer says. "Nobody is studying the possibility that Lincoln was gay.

"Why have we found it so difficult to dig up our past?''

His answer is as poignant and honest as the language in the plays, such as "The Normal Heart'' and "The Destiny of Me,'' for which he is so acclaimed. "I suspect there is much less joy than sorrow buried in our graves,'' he says.

There has been sorrow. Discrimination. Hatred. Grief. Death. Kramer is certain of that. But the study of these traumas is worthy, he says, indeed vital to the future strength of the gay and lesbian community.

The founder of the militant AIDS advocacy and protest group ACT-UP wants to see the day "when we care enough about the murder of our own family -- day after day, year after year, century after century -- to demand retribution.''

It is for the living, Kramer says, that the stories of the dead and gone must be recounted. And reclaimed.

This, he says, he learned from a great man who once said on the battlefield at Gettysburg: "It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work that (the dead) have thus far so nobly carried on. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we are here highly resolved that the dead shall not have died in vain.''

John Nichols is the editorial page editor of The Capital Times.

1) IT'S MONDAY MORNING AND I GET OUT OF BED
TRY'IN TO SHAKE THE WEB'S FROM MY HEAD
SUNS ABOUT TO COME UP FROM OVER THE HILL
I QUESS I'M GONNA NEED A FEW MORE PILLS

CAUSE I'VE BEEN WORK'IN EIGHTEEN HOURS A DAY
JUST TO KEEP THE BILL COLLECTORS AWAY
WHEN THE TAX MAN COMES KNOCK'IN AT MY DOOR
I HAVE TO TELL HIM I AIN'T GOT NO MORE....
DEAD PRESIDENTS
I AIN'T GOT NO MORE... DEAD PRESIDENTS....DEAD PRESIDENTS

LONG LEAD

2) AS I'M DRIV'IN TO WORK I SEE THE BUSY DRONES
WALK'IN DOWN THE SIDEWALKS USE'IN CELLULAR PHONES
THEY SAY COMMUNICATIONS WHAT WERE AFTER TODAY
ALL THEY REALLY CARE ABOUT IS WHEN THEY GET PAID

CAUSE THEY'VE BEEN WORK'IN EIGHTY-TWO HOURS A WEEK
THE MIGHTY DOLLAR IS THE GOD THAT THEY SEEK
THEY CALL THEIR BROKERS ON THE WALL STREET FLOOR
CAUSE THEIR TRY'IN TO MAKE A WHOLE LOT MORE.....
DEAD PRESIDENTS
TRY'IN TO MAKE A WHOLE LOT MORE..DEAD...PRESIDENTS...DEAD
PRESIDENTS

3) I SEE A CASINO AS I DRIV'IN HOME
WALK IN SIDE LIKE I'M A CELLULAR DRONE
PUT MY MONEY DOWN ON THIRTEEN RED
HOPE TH LUCKY WHEEL WILL GET ME AHEAD

CAUSE I'VE BEEN WORK'IN EIGHTEEN HOURS A DAY
JUST TO KEEP THE BILL COLLECTOR AWAY
I LOST MY MONEY WHEN IT LANDED ON BLACK
AND I'LL NEVER, EVER GET THEM BACK
DEAD PRESIDENTS...
AND I'LL NEVER, EVER GET THEM BACK...
DEAD PRESIDENTS...
DEAD PRESIDENTS.

See Spot rerun: Pet cloning offered Company plans to duplicate dogs and other pets

By Rick Weiss WASHINGTON POST Feb. 16 Ń The math was simple, Lou Hawthorne said: There are 55 million pet dogs in America, and about 10 percent of them die every year. If just a tenth of 1 percent of dog owners are willing to fork over $1,000 each for a chance to get their dear dying pets cloned, then thatŐs tens of millions of dollars to be made.
