Dr. Laura apologizes Faced with increasing criticism of her views
on homosexuality and her planned TV show, radio talk show host Dr.

apologize to gay men and lesbians. Her statement is as follows:
ÒIn the recent, very public dialogue concerning my upcoming television
show and my religious beliefs about homosexuality, many things have
been said. Some are true. Many, unfortunately, are not. But one
inviolate truth is that I never intend to hurt anyone or contribute
in any way to an atmosphere of hate or intolerance. Regrettably,
some of the words IÕve used have hurt some people, and I am sorry
for that. Words that I have used in a clinical context have been
perceived as judgment. They were not meant to characterize homosexual
individuals or encourage others to disparage homosexuals. I regularly
remind my listeners that we are all made in G-dÕs image, and therefore
we should treat one another with love and kindness, irrespective
of oneÕs faith. I will continue to discuss on radio and television
a variety of pressing moral and ethical issues facing our society;
I remain committed to doing this in an environment free from hate
or intolerance and with a deep respect for freedom of speech. I
can only hope others will share this commitment.Ó
Paramount Television Group, which is producing SchlessingerÕs
TV show this fall, issued a statement of its own, saying Paramount
has Òalways shared a commitment to present societyÕs issues without
creating or contributing to an environment of hurt, hate, or intolerance.Ó
So far, 165 stations have committed to airing SchlessingerÕs daily
show, beginning in September.

Although voters rejected the idea of gay marriage in California,
San Francisco mayor Willie Brown plans to hold another mass ceremony
later this month for domestic partners. It is the fourth year that
Brown has hosted such a ceremony. More than 100 gay and lesbian
couples are expected to exchange vows in a gathering at city hall.

City pulls ads from homophobic paper The city council in San Luis
Obispo, Calif., has voted to halt advertising in a group of free
weekly newspapers and a magazine until the owners explain their
ban on material presenting homosexuality or abortion in a favorable
light. The 4Ð1 vote on Tuesday is largely symbolic because the city
isnÕt a major advertiser in the three Gazette newspapers and San
Luis Obispo Magazine, owned by David and Mary Weyrich. The weekly
newspapers are distributed free to 126,000 households and businesses
along the central California coast. But the vote underscores the
deep community divisions that were created when the Weyrichs announced
February 24 that they would tailor some aspects of their news coverage
to their personal religious beliefs. More than a dozen editorial
employees of two of the papers have quit over the policy. The papers,
which circulate in San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, and Atascadero,
have been hit with about 400 cancellation requests. San Luis Obispo
city council member Ken Schwartz wrote Weyrich on Monday and said
he would push an advertising boycott until the newspaper recognizes
all segments of San Luis ObispoÕs population. Steve Owens, publisher
of the weekly San Luis Obispo Gazette and monthly San Luis Obispo
Magazine, told the council his publications feature positive community
news and that the Weyrich-owned papers donÕt have a policy against
featuring homosexuals. The articles just donÕt mention sexual orientation,
he said.
